New shows
• A for Andromeda (BBC, from 3 October). Six-part science-fiction series written by Fred Hoyle and John Elliott and produced as a telerecording rather than being transmitted live. A second series, The Andromeda Breakthrough begins on 28 June 1962.
• The Avengers (ABC for the ITV Network, from 18 March). Crime thriller. Runs until 1969.
• Songs of Praise (BBC, from 1 October). Sunday evening hymns. Still running in 2008.

Television: US
Hit shows
• Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color (Disney for NBC). Documentaries.
• Doctor Kildare (MGM/Arena for NBC). Medical soap.
